It was a belief of the ancient cliff dwellers that during the eclipse
of the sun that a mystical ‘sun people’ would come down from the
heavens and watch over the cliff dwellings. The ‘sun people’
would protect the food, animals and people during an eclipse of
the sun.
Sculpted under the feet of the ‘Eclipse’ are cliff dwellings. The
‘Eclipse’ is dressed as if he were part of the sacred sun dance
with a wreath around his head and an eagle bone whistle around
his neck.
